Cottage Bathroom Renovation Before and After
We renovated this bathroom the second year we lived in our home in 2012. Before we renovated, as you can see, it was just unusable!
We did these renovations on our own to save a load of money. And though we splurged on the tub, everything else was pretty basic and low cost.
We used our second bathroom in our house as the only bathroom for 2 years and now that we have completely gutted and renovated this one we haven’t used the other bathroom. That will be our next big project! So stay tuned for that one around the end of Fall 2015.
Here is the dramatic before and after of our upstairs bathroom!
Like I said, it was unusable. The hardwood floors hiding underneath that disgusting linoleum were destroyed from leaky pipes.
The walls were covered in PLASTIC tiles, not to mention we wanted a full bath upstairs and this was only a half bath.
So out came EVERYTHING! The floors, the plumbing, the electrical, etc.
We wanted this bathroom to be super cozy, warm and cottage-like. So after we redid all of the plumbing and electrical we added slate tile for a natural feel and we added a heating mat underneath so we could have heated floors on cold winter mornings. We also put up board and batten walls and new light fixtures.
When we decided to no longer use the bathroom downstairs for showering we put up a full clawfoot tub shower kit. I chose a soft creamy yellow curtain with a ruffle bottom (from Target) to add to the cottage feel. The chair is from Marshall’s and the tub is from Home Depot online.
The shower kit is from Lowe’s I believe. Here is what’s hidden behind the shower curtain. There’s a detachable hand held shower that’s great for rinsing after a bath or just washing your hair. Or turn the knob and use the regular shower head.

When you have a small bathroom, built-ins are the best use of wasted wall space. We have a small built-in we added to the left of the chair for towels and every day used products. This includes a drawer for hiding items you don’t want out in the open or for storing easily lost items like bobby pins and hair ties.
Since we were so limited on space and preferred to make this into a full, three piece bath we added a small corner sink that gets the job done just fine! The basket underneath adds extra storage for a hair dryer, curling iron, etc.
The larger mirror I purchased from a yard sale for five bucks! I painted it the same color of the walls to keep all edges soft and cozy. I love having the small swivel mirror on the other wall because I can easily pull it out and view the back of my hair using both mirrors! That happened on accident. I have just always wanted a mirror like the bronze one. I bought it from Lowe’s.
Above the shower the ceiling was rounded. I know, weird. So we continued the board and batten onto the ceiling to have a clean finish where all of the seams and lines blended.
Above the toilet we added a second, dim-able sconce. Behind the shower you can see where I store my nail polish which is in an old wooden box with different compartments. They don’t all fit perfect! But this adds more character while adding storage. And not everything needs to be perfect, right?
In the end, I was left with a bathroom I have wanted for so long. Cottage style, cozy, airy, functional and simple.
The color I used on the walls and mirror was cozy cottage from Behr Paint.
I hope someone will find some inspiration from my cozy cottage bathroom.
And can I please add that we started and completed this bathroom in 30 days!? Yes we were crazy and tried to finish it for a Christmas eve party and finished a day late. But, it was completed in record time for sure.
